Instructions :
1Combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce in a large mixing bowl. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
2Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, making a slight indentation in the center of each to prevent puffing up during cooking.
3Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are browned and any released moisture has evaporated, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the mushrooms from the skillet and set aside.
4In the same skillet, add the beef patties and cook over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet with a lid to melt the cheese.
5While the patties are cooking, prepare the buns by spreading a thin layer of butter on the cut sides. Toast the buns on a separate skillet or in a toaster until lightly golden brown.
6In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard until well combined. Spread the mixture on the top half of each toasted bun.
7To assemble the burgers, place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun. Top with a cheese-covered patty, followed by a generous portion of sautéed mushrooms. Add a slice of tomato and red onion.
8Finish by placing the top half of the bun, spread with mayonnaise and mustard, over the assembled burger. Serve immediately.
Notes :
- Choose ground beef with a slightly higher fat content, like 80/20, for juicier burgers.
- Make sure to handle the meat gently to avoid compacting it, which can make the burgers tough.
- Use fresh mushrooms for the best flavor; button or cremini mushrooms work well.
- For an extra layer of flavor, try using smoked Swiss cheese.
- Toasting the buns adds a nice texture contrast and prevents them from getting soggy.
- Use red leaf or butter lettuce for a tender and crisp bite.
- Make sure the skillet is hot before adding the beef patties to achieve a good sear.
- Let the cooked patties rest for a minute or two before assembling the burgers to retain juices.
- Ensure the mushrooms are fully cooked and any liquid is evaporated to concentrate their flavor.
- If preferred, replace mayonnaise with a lighter option like Greek yogurt.
- Ensure tomatoes are ripe but firm for the best texture.
- Use a sharp knife to thinly slice the red onion for a milder taste.
- Adjust seasoning to taste, especially if using unsalted butter.
- For a spicy kick, add a dash of hot sauce to the mayo-mustard spread.
- Regular olive oil can be substituted with a light olive oil or avocado oil.
- Serve the burgers with a side of pickles or coleslaw for added crunch.
Tips :
- Choose high-quality ground beef with a good fat content, like 80/20, for juicier burgers
- Avoid overmixing the beef to prevent tough burgers
- Make the patties slightly larger than the buns as they will shrink while cooking
- Indentations in the patties help them cook evenly and prevent them from puffing
- Use fresh, firm mushrooms for the best flavor and texture
- Clean mushrooms with a damp cloth or brush instead of rinsing to avoid excess moisture
- Cook mushrooms until all moisture evaporates to concentrate their flavor
- If using pre-sliced cheese, ensure slices are thick enough to prevent tearing when melted
- Toasting buns helps prevent them from becoming soggy and adds a nice texture
- Use a skillet or grill pan for a classic sear on the patties
- Allow burgers to rest for a minute after cooking to redistribute juices
- Butter can be replaced with olive oil for toasting buns if preferred
- Adjust seasoning to taste, especially salt and pepper, as preferences vary
- Fresh, crisp lettuce adds a nice crunch and contrast to the juicy burger
- Use ripe, firm tomatoes for the best taste and texture
- Red onions can be soaked in cold water for a milder flavor if desired
- Customize the mayonnaise-Dijon spread with additional herbs or spices for variety
- Keep an eye on the heat to avoid burning the buns or overcooking the patties
- Use a meat thermometer to achieve the perfect doneness: 160°F for medium
- Assemble burgers just before serving to maintain their texture and temperature
- Serve with a side of fries or salad for a complete meal
- Offer additional condiments like ketchup or pickles for personal preference
